Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow
Episode 1 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow - Chapter 1”
Yoko Nakajima is an A student at high school but feels isolated in class and at home. She constantly suffers from a nightmare about unfamiliar sights and dreadful monsters. One day, a blond hair boy, Keiki, shows up at school and tells Yoko that she’s the “master” he’s been looking for. Yoko is confused but monsters attack school and she has to fight them with Keiki’s servants and sword. She also gets her friends, Asano and Sugimoto, involved. She passes out but wakes up in a giant whirlpool of light where Keiki’s servant flies her to “the other side.”

Episode 2 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow - Chapter 2”
Yoko comes through the whirlpool of light, gets attacked by a monster and loses Asano and Sugimoto. She walks around an unfamiliar place, finds a village but the villagers lock her up with Sugimoto. Yoko realizes her face has changed. Asano finds Keiki as a beast under attack by another beast. The villagers take Yoko, Sugimoto and Asano to the district authorities
but new monsters attack them.

Episode 3 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow – Chapter 3”
Yoko’s Hinman power saves herself and her friends from the monsters’ attack. They are starving and hesitantly break into a farm house to steal food. The owner of the house, Takki, comes back and gives them food and clothes. When Takki promises a town job for them, Yoko trusts her but Sugimoto is skeptical. They leave for the town and see a play about Kei Kingdom on the way. Towards the end of the play, Yoko sees Aozaru, which used to be in her nightmare, play Yoko’s father and mother, and that deeply affects Yoko’s mind.

Episode 4 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow - Chapter 4”
Yoko is confused by Aozaru but decides to follow Takki with Sugimoto and Asano. At the hotel, Yoko realizes the skeptic, Sugimoto, was right about Takki. Takki tries to sell them as prostitutes. Yoko, Sugimoto and Asano manage to escape, and meet an old man named Matsuyama from Japan. They have a good time talking but the next morning, Matsuyama reports them to the police for money. Yoko’s “good girl” attitude does not work here, and she also has to manage her shaky relationship with Sugimoto and Asano. Then, Yoko’s sword sheds a light to show her a vision.

Episode 5 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow - Chapter 5”
When Sugimoto is fed up with Yoko’s whiny attitude, a blond lady, Korin, shows up, tells her that the world needs her, and convinces her to act alone. Feeling sorry for hungry Asano, Yoko decides to rob people of food, but the victims turn out to be the mother and son she met before. The mother and son invite the two to lunch but Yoko cannot trust them this time and walks away. Then, monsters attack and Asano falls off a cliff. Yoko beats the monsters but faints out of hunger and fatigue. When she wakes up, she sees Korin and Sugimoto. Sugimoto attacks her by surprise.

Episode 6 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow – Chapter 6”
Sugimoto beats Yoko with the power of a Hinman, and Yoko passes out. Yoko wakes up in the hands of a half-beast, Rakushun. No matter how nicely Rakushun treats Yoko, she refuses to open up to him. Rakushun takes Yoko to En Kingdom where all creatures are treated equally. When Yoko and Rakushun are attacked my monsters on the way, Yoko runs to fight back,
now with a smile on her face.

Episode 7 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow – Chapter 7”
Monsters attack Yoko and Rakushun on their way to En Kingdom. When Yoko sees people push their way through to survive, she realizes she cannot live for others. After defeating the monsters, Yoko finds Rakushun on the ground and gets an evil idea to finish him off so he won’t report her to the police. She escapes but Aozaru accuses her and forces her to face her own demon. When she realizes the true meaning of trust, she successfully slashes Aozaru. Yoko goes back to save Rakushun and runs into the group of Shu-Sei she met before. She takes a trip with them like a new person and reaches a harbor to get on the ship to En.

Episode 8 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow – Chapter 8”
Ko-o forces sick Korin to put a Hinman spirit in Sugimoto to kill Yoko. The group of Shu-Sei kindly asks Yoko to take the ship to En with them, but Yoko chooses not to, so she won’t put them in trouble. Kotetsu, once the critic of Yoko in the group, saw Yoko’s hardwork and prepares another ship for her to catch up with the group. Sugimoto finds Yoko but she is surprised how much Yoko has changed. Sugimoto and Yoko let their feelings out in battle. Then a sea monster attacks.

Episode 9 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow - Chapter 9”
Yoko finds Rakushun in En, accepts his kindness and opens up to him. Sugimoto feels lost without the Hinman who translates the language but nice people in En take her to the government’s office for help. After getting a government’s pass, Yoko tries to sleep in a school and surprises Rakushun. A Kai-Kyaku teacher named Heki Rakujin tells Yoko that only the immortals
and monsters have no language problems, and Yoko thinks she is a monster.
Rakushun also gives her new information about 12 kingdoms.

Episode 10 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow - Chapter 10”
When Yoko fights a tough battle against monsters, En-o Shoryu, comes to save her. He tells Yoko that only Kei’s queen can use the sword Yoko has been using, and that shocks Yoko. Yoko doesn’t like it when Rakushun starts treating her differently, so they bond as friends. Naotaka and Rokuta (Enki) tell Yoko Kei Kingdom’s status where a fake queen, Joei, controls Keiki. Yoko also learns the relationship between a kingdom, king and Kirin. She cannot accept that she is a queen but Keiki needs to be saved. Shoryu gives her one day to think it over.

Episode 11 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow - Chapter 11”
Rokuta’s Ranka(Egg) gets trapped in the Shoku(Storm) and flows down to the battlefield of Kyoto in the Medieval Period. Because Rokuta’s parents cannot afford to support him, they leave him in a mountain. A monster brings him back to the other side, and he realizes his mission as a Kirin. He must choose a king but he knows a king is responsible for battle and doesn’t want more children to suffer. Rokuta feels torn inside and flies back to Japan in the Shoku. When he meets Naotaka, a new master of Komatsu family who just lost his father, he knows he’s the one.

Episode 12 “Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow - Chapter 12”
After hearing stories about En-o, Enki and Kei’s last queen, Yoko wonders why Keiki chose her as a new queen. She goes back to town to reflect on her experience during the trip and human stupidity. At school, Heki tells Sugimoto his stories to help her come to senses. Sugimoto finds Yoko and accuses her of the low and sinful things she did, but this time, Yoko puts up a fight instead of running away. When Ko-o shows up, Yoko’s Sui-gu-to (sword) reveals his evil scheme.

Episode #13 Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow – Last Chapter
Ko-o tries to kill Yoko out of jealousy, and that makes his Kirin, Korin, sick. Korin chooses death by disobeying Ko-o’s order to kill Yoko. That makes Yoko decide to get Keiki back from Kei’s fake queen, Joei. Yoko’s still not sure whether to be Kei’s queen or go home, but Rakushun gives her good advice. With En-o’s help, Yoko breaks Keiki’s seal, accepts him as her Kirin, rules Kei Kingom and takes the throne. Keiki causes the Shoku for Sugimoto to go home.

Episode #14 Shadow of the Moon, The Sea of Shadow – Transition Chapter
Ko-o’s conspiracy to stop Kei from being richer than Ko fails with the death of his Kirin, Korin. Yoko and Rakushun talk about the world. Yoko is a queen of one of the 12 Kingdoms created by Heaven and Keiki is her Kirin. Yoko(Kei-o), En-o, Enki and Taiki are Taikas, who were supposed to be born in this world but were born in Japan because their Rankas(Eggs) got trapped in the Shoku(Storm). Yoko is concerned about Asano, who’s still missing, and Sugimoto, who went home. Rakushun thinks Yoko regrets her choice to be a queen, but she thanks him for counting on her to build a kingdom.

Episode #15 The Sea of Wind, The Shore of The Maze- Chapter 1
Kei Kingdom’s Kirin, Keiki, chooses Yoko as the queen and Yoko visits Mt. Ho to be officially enthroned. Keiki and Yoko stop by a palace where Kirins’ Shashinboku Tree (Unselfish Tree) is. Yoko hears a story about the missing Kirin, Taiki, and Tai’s female monster which longed so much to find him. Sugimoto is now back in Japan and hears a rumor of a boy named Kaname who was spirited away. He turns out to be Taiki, the unusual Black Kirin.

Episode #16 The Sea of Wind, The Shore of The Maze- Chapter 2
At Mt. Ho, Yoko hears stories of Tai Kingdom’s Kirin who grew up in Horai(Japan) as a Taika like her. Taiki’s Ranka was caught in the Shoku and flowed down to Horai, then Taiki came back to Mt. Ho 10 years later. Because he had felt that he didn’t belong in his family in Japan, he accepted his destiny as a Kirin to choose a king. Lady Priests who take care of Taiki are worried that Taiki still cannot transform into Kirin’s original beast shape, and that bothers Taiki. Then he gets kidnapped.

Episode #17 The Sea of Wind, The Shore of The Maze- Chapter 3
A man named Goson captures Taiki to be a king in a wrong way, but Chief Shin saves Taiki. Now the lady priests are worried about two things: Taiki cannot transform into Kirin’s original shape to choose a king; he does not have Shireis(servants) to guard himself. Lady Gyokuyo invites Keiki to see Taiki. They have trouble communicating at first but later become friends. Keiki motivates Taiki to practice transformation and catching Shireis. Keiki also learns to be understanding people’s feelings instead of being right, which improves his relationship with Kei-o.

Episode #18 The Sea of Wind, The Shore of The Maze- Chapter 4
The gate opens in summer and people come climbing the mountain to be chosen as a king. Taiki is not sure if he’s capable of choosing a king but lady priest encourages him by saying “when the king is here, you’ll receive the Heaven’s mission.” Taiki finds two prospective people, Ms. Risai and Mr. Gyoshu, both military commanders, but neither of them are a king.

Episode #19 The Sea of Wind, The Shore of The Maze – Chapter 5
Taiki is relieved of his duty to find a king among the first group of people who came climbing the mountain. He goes Sugu hunting with Gyoso and Risai. Risai gets trapped and Gyoso gets hurt by a giant monster, Totetsu. Taiki faces the monster and successfully defeats it to be his Shirei.(servant) When Gyoso leaves the mountain, Taiki misses him so much that he finally transforms into a Kirin, chooses him to be a king and swears his loyalty.
But he didn’t receive the Heaven’s mission...

Episode #20 The Sea of Wind, The Shore of The Maze – Last Chapter
Taiki got a Shirei, transformed into a Kirin, and made Gyoso his king. But he believes he made a mistake and Gyoso would be killed by Heaven. After Gyoso and Taiki receives the Heaven’s decree, Gyoso invites Keiki to the palace for Taiki. Keiki sets up a meeting for Taiki, Shoryu and Rokuta. When Taiki cannot bow to Shoryu, he realizes that he chose the right king. By hearing this story, Yoko learns that the fact that a Kirin chooses a person is the Heaven’s Mission.
Yoko is now ready to be a queen.

Episode #21 The Sea of Wind, The Shore of The Maze – Transition Chapter
Rokuta is worried about the conditions of the world made of 12 kingdoms and Kokai. Ko and Ho are in bad shape because they don’t have a king. The worst is Tai. Tai-o and Taiki are missing. Rokuta remembers Taiki whom he brought back from Horai. If Taiki is dead Tai’s new Ranka should be growing on Shashinboku Tree in Mt. Ho but there’s no sign of it. Rokuta is still looking for Taiki.

Episode #22 A Letter
Rancho, a message carrying bird, comes to Rakushun at his college campus in En. It was a message from Yoko, now a new queen of Kei. She tells him that she found out Asano could be alive, and that she visited Rakushun’s mother in Ko, and also invites him to her enthronement. Rakushun sends the bird back to Yoko. They say to each other they’re doing fine, but they both know that’s not true. They’re both having a hard time fitting in their new environments. Yoko sets the name of Kei’s new era Seki-Raku, Seki from Yoko “Sekishi”, Raku from “Rakushun.”

Episode #23 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 1
In Meiji are, Japan, Suzu Oki was born into a poor farmer’s family. She was sold to pay the family’s debt, but fell off a cliff and ended up in Kyokai in the other world. Because she can’t speak the language, she travels with Shusei, the traveling performers. One day she meets an Immortal named Riyo who can understand her language. Rin begs her to take her. Riyo takes her to the mountain and gives her an Immortal Status so she can understand the language, but practically slaves her for 100 years. Shokei is a girl of the same age as Suzu, but lives a luxurious life as the daughter (Koshu) of Ho-o. However, Ho-o’s policy is too strict and the people rebel to take over the dynasty. Shokei’s parents are both killed, and she’s forced to give up her Immortal status to start living as an orphan. Yoko is about the same age as them. She deals with her own problem as a new queen, but now she faces her crowd of Kei Kingdom at the enthronement.

Episode #24 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn – Chapter 2
Riyo comes home to tell Suzu about the new Kei-o to torture her. The new Kei-o comes from the same back ground as Suzu, but her social status is much higher than her. Suzu starts hoping that Kei-o will come rescue her. On the other hand, Shokei, the former princess of Ho, now endures tough manual labor as an orphan. The orphanage’s manager also finds out Shokei’s background and blames her for the execution of her son. Then, Shokei hears a rumor about the new Kei-o and gets jealous. Yoko finishes the enthronement and talks to En-o, Enki and Rakushun. She’s indecisive about the first notice to the people in Kei and Baku State leader’s issue. But she finally manages to make a good decision... or so she thought...

Episode #25 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn – Chapter 3
Suzu dreams of Kei-o coming to rescue her from her mean master Riyo, who sends her to a dangerous cliff with a fierce monster for punishment. Shokei cannot accept the change from the past and is jealous of Kei-o. She gets caught singing a song from the palace, and all villagers find out her past as Princess, but she is in denial of her father’s injustice. Kei-o, Yoko, studies under 3 personal aides, Taishi, Taifu, Taiho, and learns of politics among the Chief Officers. Yoko is tired and accepts a dinner invitation by Taishi. The Head of the 6 Chief Officers(Chosai), Seikyo, asks for Yoko’s decision on creating jobs for soldiers. Since Seikyo is more familiar with the subject, Yoko leaves the decision up to him, and that makes Keiki unhappy.

Episode #26 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 4
Suzu escapes from her mean master to visit Sai-o in Chokan Palace. Kei State’s Army also saves Shokei from the villagers trying to kill her after they found out her identity as Princess of Ho, and takes her to Gekkei, who killed Shokei’s father. Gekkei tells her to leave the kingdom, and the queen of Kyo Kingdom across Kyo-Kai takes her in. Yoko finds out she was a target for assassination by her 3 personal aides including her dinner host, Taishi, and Kokan whom she recently discharged from his position, and also Chief Heaven’s Officer. Fortunately, the attempt is stopped by the palace’s security. At the meeting with officers, Yoko realizes that she is trying to please everybody, still acting the same as before, and starts thinking about leaving the palace.

Episode #27 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 5
Gekkei saves Shokei out of trouble and sends her to Kyo Kingdom. Kyo-o gives her a choice to whether work as a servant in the palace or live in a Rike(orphanage). Shokei grows hostile towards Kei-o and Kyo-o. Suzu loves the Sai Kingdom’s palace but Sai-o recommends that she go live among people to grow up. Suzu leaves for Kei Kingdom to depend on Kei-o who is from Horai like herself. Yoko became a queen to improve the living conditions of the people in the kingdom but gets no result, so she leaves the palace to go live with the people to find out what their needs are. Suzu reaches So Kingdom and runs into the Shusei group she used to travel with.
She also meets a new Kai-Kyaku.

Episode #28 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 6

Suzu runs into a Shusei group she used to travel with in So Kingdom, and meets another Kai-Kyaku, Asano. But he refuses Suzu’s offer to travel to Kei with her. Suzu also saves a boy from falling off a ship, but he tells her he doesn’t like her, nor feels sorry for her Kai-Kyaku background. Yoko goes to live with the people at a Rike to find out the ordinary people’s needs. When she protects them from a monster’s attack, she sees Rangyoku struggle to save her brother, and wishes she had someone to care about, too. Shokei cannot take working as a servant in the palace, so she steals jewels and runs away. Kyo-o sends out the army to find her.

Episode #29 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 7
Yoko starts living in a different world with ordinary people in the kingdom. Enho, the old man, at the Rike teaches Yoko about a village and gives her advice. When Suzu gets on a ship to Kei, Seishu tells her a story about the death of his family and makes her realize that she was just playing a victim, blaming everyone for the pain but herself, and that she’s not the only one who has to go through the pain. Shokei finds out that if she takes a ship from Tai to Kei as a refugee, she can get a Kei ID. She gets arrested at a hotel with Rakushun who was sharing the room with her. Keiki’s messenger, Hyoki, worries Yoko with the news that Kokan who plotted Yoko’s assassination is still missing. Yoko then overhears the name of the Chief Heaven’s Officer, who was part of the assassination plot, spoken in the conversation between Enho and his guest.

Episode #30 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 8
Shokei gets arrested by Ryu’s officials but released easily for bribing them. Because traveling to Tai is dangerous, Rakushun offers to take her to En. Shokei learns a lot from Rakushun but is still unable to understand her responsibility as a Koshu (King’s daughter). Suzu’s party gets raided by gangs because she did not hire guards. They are saved but Suzu starts blaming herself. When others tell her it’s not her fault, she gets angry, which makes her relate to Master Riyo. Yoko investigates to locate assassins and finds herself in trouble but is saved by a boy named Sekki. Then she finds Seishu bleeding to death in the street. At the boy’s dying site, people’s carelessness aggravates her.

Episode #31 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 9
Rakushun takes Shokei to the border of Ryu and En. After Shokei lost her parents, she had no idea why she had to suffer so much in poverty, hated by many, but Rakushun teaches her the responsibility to the people, which was missing in Shokei’s family’s administration. Kei-o, Yoko, goes to live among the people in the kingdom for learning experience, and Rakushun completely believes she will be back on the throne as a better queen. Shokei wishes she had that kind of care and trust she never had, but Rakushun advises her to move on and start a new life. Asano also talks to Shoko about how wrong the world is and they start a scheme.

Episode #32 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 10
Suzu cannot accept Shoko getting away with murdering Seishun, and decides to revenge him. Yoko also finds out about Shoko’s evil behavior from Enho. Shokei goes to Kei and hears people complain about new Kei-o and unimproved living conditions in the kingdom, but also hears that Wa State’s Shi-Sui will give refugees a piece of land and citizenship. Suzu finds out that Shoko is protected by a person in a higher place, and decides to revenge Seishun on Shoko and Kei-o.

Episode #33 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 11
Suzu decides to revenge on Shoko and Kei-o for Seishun. Yoko senses someone’s after her and investigates Wa State. Suzu tries to kill Kokan but is stopped by Kosho and his group, who turn out to have the same purpose of beating Shoko. Shokei stops by Wa State’s capital, Meikaku, to witness a criminal being nailed. That reminds her of her past and she throws a rock at a guard.
Yoko happens to be there and tries to save her.

Episode #34 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 12
Shokei is saved by a man named Kantai. Kantai tells her about Shoko and Gao, and Shokei feels obligated to report them to Kei-o, so Kei-o won’t repeat the same mistake of being ignorant as she did. Suzu and Kosho talk about the two tyrants and completely agree on negative views on them. Suzu tells Yoko about Kokan’s good reputation among people and Yoko gets frustrated about her decision she made on him in the past. Yoko goes back to the Rike to find dead Rangyoku
and injured Kei-Kei.

Episode #35 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 13
While Yoko visits Wa State, the Rike in Ei State is raided. Rangyoku is killed; Enho is kidnapped; Kei-Kei is wounded and taken to Kimba Palace. Yoko investigates Ro, the man who visited Enho before, but he’s gone. Shokei is asked to sell Toki’s to make money to hire soldiers while Suzu is asked to buy Tokis. They meet and realize they share the same purpose, except that Shokei corrects Suzu’s misconception about Kei-o. Kosho’s group suspects Yoko probing for information, and they move to a different hotel. Yoko gets suspicious of them for kidnapping of Enho, but after Kosho’s explanation, Yoko joins his group for rebellion.

Episode #36 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 14
Yoko joins a rebel to defeat Shoko. The rebel break up Shoko’s 3000 soldiers by raiding one of Shoko’s houses and storage first, leaving the letter “Shu-on”(meaning Death-to-Shoko.) Kantai and Shokei hear about the revolt and they’re worried about Gaho’s support for Shoko. Yoko and the rebel raid Shoko’s another house as a decoy, and Yoko runs into Asano there.
Now that Asano is with Shoko, Yoko decides to stick with her mission as a queen,
leaves him and goes to Shoko’s Go Castle.

Episode #37 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 15
The rebels led by Kosho and Yoko take Shoko’s castle and arrest Shoko. Yoko decides to let Shoko live for confessing the corruption in higher places of the government. The castle is, however, already surrounded by Shoko’s soldiers and the State Army’s main force is arriving soon. Suzu sends Asano to get Kantai’s help in Meikaku but he gets stopped by Summer Officers. When the rebels try to force their way out of the castle at dawn, the strong State’s cavalries strike. Then, Kantai’s force arrives to help them. It turns out that Kantai has a bigger plan than arresting Shoko.

Episode #38 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn – Chapter 16
It turns out that the former Chosai, Seikyo, controlled Gaho and Shoko. Seikyo sends the Royal Army to fight the rebels in Takuho not knowing that Kei-o, Yoko is among them. Suzu, Shokei and Yoko can relate to the Takuho guys not joining the rebellion because it used to be more comfortable for them to play a victim than to make a courageous move for fair treatment. Kosho and Sekki debate over whether to help the villagers under attack by the enemy, which will put them in bigger trouble. Yoko, Suzu and Shokei debate over whether to save a boy being killed, knowing that others are being killed elsewhere. They all conclude to do the best they can to live by their principle. Yoko believes results should be better achieved by discouraging the enemy without killing them, and that’s why she decided to take Shoko to court instead of killing him. Yoko reveals her identity as Kei-o to Suzu and Shokei, and Suzu and Shokei reveal theirs to the villagers who blamed the rebels for starting trouble for them.

Episode #39 A Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn – Last Chapter
Keiki comes to Takuho and Yoko rides him to the Royal Army to prove her legitimacy as the queen. Yoko orders the Royal Army and State Army to go arrest Gaho and Seikyo and save Enho. Yoko goes back to the rebels to thank them for doing the job for her. When Yoko goes back to the palace, she asks Shokei and Suzu to join her, appoints Kokan as the Chosai, Shohaku(Enho) as Taishi, Kantai as the Royal Army General, and Saibo as the Wa State’s leader. She also bans bowing because bowing as a rule does more harm than good to everyone. She believes that one must have courage and earn respect, and that’s good for the kingdom.
